Ava caught economist Yanis Varoufakis before his conversation with Zack Polanski, Jeremy Corbyn, and Grace Blakeley at a DiEM25 event in London.
The former Greek Minister of Finance offered a blistering critique of today’s political leadership across the UK, Europe, US, and beyond.
Varoufakis doesn’t hold back about Prime Minister Keir Starmer, accusing him of “buckling” under pressure from Donald Trump and branding him “the master of U-turns.” He argues that Britain has lost its political spine on the global stage, acting more like a subordinate than sovereign power.
On Ukraine, he offers a scathing assessment of the West’s handling of the war and relations with Vladimir Putin, questioning whether they have any strategy at all. His verdict is brutal: no plan for war, no plan for peace, and total reliance on the United States.
On Iran and global tensions, he warns of deep fractures in the international order, linking them to decades of economic stagnation and political inertia. He tells of Britain’s own stagnation and reliance on global markets, for which he blames Margaret Thatcher.
