What’s really pushing you deep down?

Russell uses a jiu-jitsu story to make a sharp point about motivation, arguing that if you stopped most people in the middle of what they were doing and asked what was really driving them, the honest answer often wouldn’t be the action itself. Underneath it, there’s usually something deeper — fear, pride, the need to prove yourself, or simply not wanting to be humiliated.

He then pushes the question beyond the individual, asking what really drives powerful figures like Trump and Andy Burnham beneath all the ambition, image and public performance. From there, Russell lands on a striking image: what if everyone could be shown their own tombstone, like Scrooge in A Christmas Carol? A reminder that status, power and ego all eventually run into the same unavoidable reality.

A thoughtful reflection on motivation, ego and mortality — and on what might change if we were more honest about what is really driving us.
