What twenty years of daily meditation can still miss | Eckhart Tolle

Six to six thirty, every day. Then the next thing. Eckhart Tolle describes that meditation with some affection, and then names what can go wrong with it. Not the sitting. The sense of doing it. When a practice becomes something you do, at a set time, before you do something else, it quietly joins the list of everything else you do. Twenty years of that may have improved your life considerably, he says, and still left the one thing untouched, because true meditation is not a doing at all. It is the realisation that you are already inseparable from this moment. That is why seeking is such an awkward position to be in. Seeking implies a future in which the thing will be found, and the thing is not in the future. The present moment is the only opening there is, and it is the one thing the human mind habitually overlooks. Does that make practice pointless? He says not necessarily. Practice may be exactly what takes you to the point where you can put it down. The Buddha spent years on extreme disciplines and became extraordinarily good at them, and it was only when he stopped, sat under a tree and gave up seeking entirely that the realisation came. Could he have skipped all that? Apparently not. So the practice stays. What changes is the doing. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session. Join Eckhart Tolle Now to watch. 👇
