What changes when a bad thought finds nobody home | Eckhart Tolle

There is a moment that happens occasionally in a nightmare. Something is chasing you, and then you realise you are dreaming. The fear drains away, because none of it can touch you now. And if you turn toward the monster, and are simply friendly to it, it stops being a monster and becomes something else entirely. Eckhart Tolle uses that as a picture of what changes when awareness arrives, and he describes the mechanism precisely. Thinking does not stop. It slows considerably, and a great deal of it turns out to be unnecessary, but thoughts still come. What changes is that they no longer carry a sense of self. Before, you looked for yourself in every thought, so a thought saying this is unbearable was a statement about you. Afterwards, the same thought arrives, finds nobody home, and subsides. It is just a thought. Then something else becomes possible. When thought is no longer the master, it becomes the servant, and a remarkably good one. Every creative impulse, every intuition, every idea that arrives whole comes from that quieter place rather than from effort. He makes a sharp observation about this. Creative people usually have some access to it, but often only inside the narrow territory of their work. Present and alive while making something, and entirely lost the rest of the time. Which is not enough, he says. The point is not to be awake in one room of your life. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session. Join Eckhart Tolle Now to watch. 👇
