Russell pointed out a growing gap between what was campaigned on and what’s actually unfolding, from renewed involvement near Israel and a likely conflict with Iran to an ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine that was once promised to end almost immediately. He argued none of this was explicitly what was promised, and that the rhetoric never quite matched the reality once in power. Russell fell back on an old piece of wisdom instead, don’t follow leaders, watch your own parking meters, because institutions and systems of power are fallible by nature no matter who’s running them. Promises are easy to make from the outside looking in.
