Russell reflects on the way the media treats high-profile women, using Caroline Flack and Princess Diana as examples of what he sees as a much deeper pattern than simply irresponsible reporting. He references the documentary The Corporation, which argues that if a corporation were treated like a person, its behavior could resemble that of a psychopath, and applies that idea to media institutions acting as a collective, even when individual journalists may believe they are simply doing their jobs.
The most disturbing part of his argument is the speed with which that same media machine can switch roles. Someone can be relentlessly scrutinized, mocked and torn apart while they are alive, only for the tone to change completely the moment they die, with grief, sympathy and nostalgia becoming the next thing to sell.
A sharp and uncomfortable reflection on media culture, public spectacle, and the way famous women can be turned into content at every stage of their lives.
