In April of this year, when we announced a new fireball dataset we call the “Huge Event Travel Distance.” The question then became: is this new dataset a passing trend, or will it continue?
Based on the July 2026 fireball data, this concern has ostensibly materialized into a consistent and concerning new trend that portends a darker future.
June is statistically the lowest month of the year for fireball activity, and July is when the uptick begins now, through the end of the year. The numbers are serious and speak of a new storm brewing through year-end.
The concern now is that we could see new developments, as discussed in our previous article, Signs of Nemesis Outbound Leg. With that thought in mind, let’s dive into the numbers.
July 2026 Fireballs
Fireballs are reported worldwide, and the American Meteor Society is the primary source for this dataset in North America.
AMS Multistate / Country Fireballs
Multistate/country fireballs cross the borders of multiple states and countries. This is a critical category in the dataset because these fireballs must travel long distances to receive reports from across large geographic areas. We refer to these types of fireballs as “skimmers” because they exhibit flat trajectories.
July 2026 reached first place for this period, ahead of the first six months of this year. It will be interesting to see the results for August 2026.

AMS Huge Event Fireballs
It’s common for Multistate/Country Fireballs to be reported as major events because a fireball is considered major when 100 or more eyewitnesses report it. We call them “plungers” because of their steep trajectory.
June 2026 set an all-time record for this month and, to our surprise, July dropped considerably. When we look at the Huge Event Travel Distance data, the surprise will become twofold.
Huge Event Travel Distance
What we are seeing now is the steady continuation of a new trend. Previously, Huge Event fireballs were limited to a narrower reporting area due to their steep trajectories. Note the red bounding boxes for the key data.
As you can see in the July reporting, both of the Huge Event fireballs also showed lengthy, multi-country travel distances. Let’s put this in the context of huge events from January 2009 to present.
What we are seeing now is a continuing uptick in the number of huge events. Even if the other datasets show moderate increases, it appears that if Huge Events continue at this pace, it will be interesting to see how the year ends for this dataset.
AMS Monthly Total Fireballs
The monthly total fireballs are the most critical category in this dataset; July 2026 evidenced a dramatic record-setting uptick.
As we pointed out in our previous Signs article, this is a significant statistical increase, indicating that Earth is passing through a dense region of the Nemesis Cloud. The question then becomes: will this trend continue through the remainder of 2026?

Yearly AMS Fireball Totals
The total number of fireballs in July 2026 exceeds 2018. The question becomes, will 2026 top 2020 by year-end?
Now that we’re in Q3 2026, we’re concerned that the statistical increases across all datasets seen in the Q2 2026 reporting will continue in this quarter. If so, the risk of a serious impact in the second half of this year will increase.

July 2026 is historically a low month of the year, yet this year it’s in third place, just behind June. This year is remarkable, especially compared with the USGS.
According to Volcano Discovery data, July 2026 came in third for 2026. Meanwhile, the USGS numbers remain consistent with its data-capping strategy and fall within its artificial reporting range.
In July 2026, there were 43,809 earthquakes. Notably, there are 10 earthquakes with magnitudes between 6.0 and 7.0. What caught our attention was a 7.3 event off the shores of Mexico.
