The source was an MP4 file based on a non-HIFI VHS tape. It was pretty awash in general noise and distortion, but after applying noise reduction, EQing and some experimental tricks, it turned out better than I thought it would, with better than 55 decibels of dynamic range. Stripping away that much general noise and distortion, however, revealed more problems – hundreds of clicks, pops, coughs and other transient noises. I spent a good 15 hours going over the sound second by second, reducing or eliminating just about all these annoying sounds.
