Noam Chomsky – 1998-06-12 – Power of the People – Woods Hole – Improved Sound

Be sure to pick at least 720p for best sound quality. Noam begins speaking at 3:00 in.
On June 12, 1998, Noam Chomsky spoke and took questions at the annual Z Media gathering at Woods Hole, MA.

The audio was full of hiss, hum and general distortion which changed in intensity and type frequently, depending on which microphones were active, etc. Using digital noise reduction, selective EQing and some experimental techniques, I managed to increase the dynamic range to better than 50 decibels for much of the recording. Then I went over the sound, second by second, removing over a hundred pops, clicks, coughs, etc. In the first few minutes, and in the later half (the Q&A) there was too much noise to remove it all without making it sound artificial, so there is some transient noise there still.

Alas, the video ends abruptly. I hope that a full version will emerge.

For the video, I loosened up the contrast to smooth out the picture, and boosted the color a bit.
