In the early hours of 24 October 1968, unusual activity was reported around Minot AFB and nearby missile facilities. Missile maintenance and security personnel described bright orange-red objects behaving unlike normal aircraft, including hovering and abrupt motion.
A B-52H crew on a training mission also reported an anomalous radar target that paced the aircraft, performing incredible maneuvers on the radar scope before breaking away. The crew was vectored toward a bright light near the ground that they, after a flyover, described as a large structured object.
The incident escalated into a full investigation when security measures at missile launch facilities were found to have been mysteriously tampered with by culprits that left no tracks, fingerprints, or other signs of presence – except for unexplained radiation signatures.
The case matters because it is a multi-witness, military-context incident with documentation, interviews, and discussion of radar/visual elements—an evidentiary profile that is uncommon for Cold War-era events.
