Russell reflects on the old phrase about there being “no atheists on a sinking ship” and what happens when the comforts of ordinary life suddenly stop feeling sufficient. When death or crisis becomes real, he suggests, people begin reaching beyond the material world for a different kind of reality.
He then describes the feeling that something about the world simply isn’t working — and asks whether drugs, sex, fame, money or other material pleasures can ever be transformed into the deeper, sanctifying experience people may actually be searching for. His conclusion is that they cannot.
The deeper question is whether crisis creates that spiritual realization — or simply reveals something that was already there.
