Dangers Awaiting Us
A very close approach of another planet to our world would lead to devastating gravitational effects. This would cause massive tides in the oceans, violent earthquakes in the Earth’s crust, and volcanic eruptions. Furthermore, Earth’s orbit could be disrupted, its atmosphere stripped away, and the planet’s axis could shift, leading to complete climate change and ultimately the end of life. Gravitational Effects: The approach of two large masses would increase tidal forces to enormous proportions. This could alter Earth’s rotation speed. Natural Disasters: Earth’s internal structure would be shaken by this immense gravitational force, triggering violent intercontinental earthquakes and simultaneous volcanic activity. Atmosphere and Climate: The approaching planet could “strip away” or destroy Earth’s atmosphere. This could lead to a lack of breathable oxygen or extreme temperature fluctuations. Orbital Change: Earth could deviate from its orbit around the Sun, pushing us outside the habitable zone and potentially causing freezing or burning. In short, another planet getting too close to Earth would trigger catastrophic events that would end life on that planet.
