In April of this year, we announced a new fireball dataset we call the “Huge Event Travel Distance.” The question then became: is this new dataset a passing trend, or will it continue? Based on the August 2026 fireball data, this concern clearly portends a darker future.
When Yowusa.com researcher JP Jones sent me the August data, he added a sobering note. “August, as you will see, was a very busy month for fireballs. We have either peaked, or we are entering a period of pain; time will tell.”
Based on the increasing size of Nemesis evidenced in our updated Nemesis Awareness Collection No. 11, we’re past any hopes for a peak, because the numbers for August 2026 are truly disturbing.
January through July are typically the lowest months for our fireball datasets, and then in August, we see a peak in activity through the end of the year. Therefore, what’s ahead is likely to align with projections for the coming years, as illustrated in our latest article, Nemesis Outbound 2026 to 2030. With that thought in mind, let’s dive into the numbers.
August 2026 Fireballs
Fireballs are reported worldwide, and the American Meteor Society is the primary source for this dataset in North America.
AMS Multistate / Country Fireballs
Multistate/country fireballs cross the borders of multiple states and countries. This is a critical category in the dataset because these fireballs must travel long distances to receive reports from across large geographic areas. We refer to these types of fireballs as “skimmers” because they exhibit flat trajectories.
August 2026 took first place for this month by a remarkably significant margin. It will be interesting to see the results for September 2026.

AMS Huge Event Fireballs
Multistate/Country Fireballs are often reported as major events because a fireball is considered major when 100 or more eyewitnesses report it. We call them “plungers” because of their steep trajectory.
August 2026 set an all-time record for this month, jumping way ahead of July. Slightly behind July, the difference will be surprising when we look at the Huge Event Travel Distance data.
Huge Event Travel Distance
What we are seeing now is the steady continuation of a new trend. Previously, Huge Event fireballs were limited to a narrower reporting area due to their steep trajectories. Note the red bounding boxes for the key data.
As you can see in the August reporting, the number of Huge Event fireballs also showed lengthy, multi-country travel distances. The event on August 12, 2026 crossed an international border between two countries and 2 time zones.
What we are seeing now is a continuing uptick in the number of huge events across three years, and the third represents 2/3 of a year. This uptick startled us because, if the trend holds, 2026 will set an all-time record for huge events. Assuming that Huge Events continue at this pace.
AMS Monthly Total Fireballs
The monthly total fireballs are the most critical category in this dataset; August 2026 evidenced an all-time dramatic record.
Of all the datasets we report on, this is the most disturbing high; it is twice as much as 2022, which until this year was the highest for this period. Without doubt, Earth is passing through a dense region of the Nemesis Cloud. Have we reached a peak, or will this trend continue through the remainder of 2026?

Yearly AMS Fireball Totals
The total number of fireballs in August 2026 exceeds 2019 and is nearly the same as 2020, 2023 and 2024. The question becomes: will 2026 top 2022 by year-end?
Now that we’re in Q3 2026, we’re concerned about the statistical increases across all datasets because they raise the threat of a serious impact in the remainder of this year.

According to Volcano Discovery data, August 2026 came in second for 2026. Meanwhile, the USGS numbers remain consistent with its data-capping strategy and fall within its artificial reporting range.
In August 2026, there were 47,485 earthquakes. Notably, there were three earthquakes above magnitude 7 and 12 quakes with magnitudes between 6.0 and 7.0. What caught our attention was a 7.7 event that struck Indonesia.
