Eckhart Tolle’s father had a line for reaching a certain age. Mirrors, he said, are not the same quality they used to be. It is a joke about something almost nobody discusses. There comes a point where the reflection stops confirming who you thought you were, and that is far more disorienting than it sounds, because of what was quietly built on it. He starts with the phrase human being, which he says is significant. Most people, he suggests, are only human. The being part goes unrecognised. The first thing we identify with is the body, because it is the most obvious. You can see it and touch it. If yours happens to be strong or admired, identifying with it is almost unavoidable, since the ego is always looking for superiority and always afraid of loss. His own mother drew much of her sense of self and her worth from her appearance, and when time did what time does, it became very hard for her. He remembers sitting with her while she talked about how unbearable everything had become. Then she stopped, and after a silence she said, isn’t it strange, we are born and then we die. That, he says, is real philosophy. Socrates thought all of it begins in a sense of wonder at the mystery of being alive. The point is not that the body does not matter.
