In practice, hospitals were committing every patient under the guise of mental health danger, even when most weren’t an immediate risk. The system was set up so police could transport patients because using medical transport like ambulances was expensive, and increasing police budgets is politically easy.
Many patients just wanted help with issues like addiction, not involuntary hospitalization. Yet hospital staff would fabricate “suicide plans” on paperwork to justify commitment. This created a cycle of unnecessary forced treatment.
I saw what was happening and pushed back by allowing voluntary admission whenever possible. It drew criticism, but it was the ethical choice—showing how the system prioritizes procedure, budgets, and appearances over genuine care.
