Russell reflected on how becoming a father changed something fundamental in him, realizing you can’t truly be a father to anyone else until you’ve first become one to yourself, accepting that who you are is already enough. He pushed back against what he called the broad cultural message, that you’re insufficient until you acquire the right body, possessions, approval, or affiliations, arguing it isn’t personal to any one person, it’s practically universal. Russell pointed out how often wildly successful people describe feeling inferior or not good enough as the very thing that drove them, and wondered aloud whether they were ever really driven at all, or simply dragged forward by insecurity and shame the whole time. Sometimes the story behind the achievement is quieter and sadder than the achievement itself.
