Bright red orange orbs flying in a fanned out formation, rapidly moving and changing direction

I was talking with my neighbor while looking East into the night sky above the mountain. I noticed what I originally assumed was space debris; about a hundred or more bright, red-orange orbs traveling linearly South to North in a fan-shaped cloud moving incredibly fast. I point it out, and my neighbor excitedly confirms he sees it as well. Immediately after I point it out, the entire cloud suddenly turns 90° and begins heading to the East while accelerating to even faster speeds. The bright red-orange color remained consistent, but the fan-shaped cloud morphed and folded in on itself showing variances in altitude among the cluster of dots. As the cloud continued East, the dots progressively assumed the fan-shaped cloud again. As I was wondering if I just saw a drone swarm, the cloud moved over the mountain continuing East, and the altitude became apparent for the first time as the cloud disappeared behind the mountain. At that moment, I knew it wasn’t a drone swarm from an entertainment event. One strange note is the sound; there was this bizarre whistling sound similar to Hollywood wind sound effects. I couldn’t pin the source down, but it came from the East.

Background:

I am a Marine Corps veteran who worked in aviation at Camp Pendleton and Yuma (on occasion). I am also a professional UAS pilot and FPV racing drone pilot. I am intimately familiar with UAS (both slow and fast moving) and military aviation operations. Im not sure what my neighbor’s background is since he just moved here.
